Your Cape Computer Assistant Links Page

This page contains a "mini catalog" of useful links for researching and obtaining technical information of troubleshooting, maintaining and improving your computing environment. The number of technical resources on the Internet is, of course, overwhelming - we have deliberately distilled this list to a limited number of sites and/or newsletters we've found particularly helpful.

Note that each of these will open in a new "browser window" - just close that window to return here. And, of course, we assume no liability for the information you find there - we are just being helpful in the interest of helping users become self sufficient.

Technical Newsletters

These sites provide technical information and offer you the opportunity to subscribe to weekly or semi-weekly newsletters. All of these are proven resources; some include advertising but it is well identified and all deliver their products on an ethical basis (e.g. no SPAM, offers of sensational mortgage rates or miracle drugs!)

LangaList.com - Offers both paid and free newsletters. Some articles are targeted at experienced users but the newsletters are  generally very helpful. Old versions are archived on the website.

Netsquirrel.com - Offers a combination of Internet and Technical features, along with some classroom features. The Internet Tourbus newsletter offered there is excellent - it focuses on one particular subject each week.

NeatNetTricks.com - Another superb resource offering both free and paid newsletters. They also offer occasional discounts on special software packages they have reviewed.

Komando.com - Kim Kommando does a weekly radio talk show on computing issues (not heard on the Cape). Her website and newsletter contain items covered there along with  very good "Tips" and "Cool Sites" sections. The newsletter is free and contains well-identified ads.

Senior Sites

Computers for Seniors is a Cape Cod based organization focused on improving computer literacy for Cape Seniors. The Website is updated weekly with new tips and feature articles on computing issues. They also offer inexpensive courses you can attend, hold monthly meetings with feature speakers and offer an online forum where you can ask questions.

SeniorNet is a  national organization with a very comprehensive website  covering a variety of topics. They also offer a forum, though it is national in scope.

General Tips/Magazine Sites:

Windows Annoyances is a very comprehensive addressed at just what the name says - solving Windows Annoyances. Be careful here - it can get pretty technical.

PC World is a general PC technology publication. They have "tips" and software sections that can be very helpful. They are generally less technical and more general user oriented than some others, such as PC Magazine.

Smart Computing is a more  lay-oriented publication that often contains very useful articles - Subscribers to one magazine receive unlimited Web access to a group of several related magazines and a series of tutorial books.
